The Merchant doesn't see danger; he sees an opportunity to pursue his dream of becoming a successful, official tradesman of the guild. Though he's been on countless adventures across innumerable exotic lands, what he truly wants is the recognition of being a professional in his field. His willingness to see the good in everything has made him a bit of a target for those of lesser scruples, his current employers included.
